I find myself in a pickle

A check of the calender shows that dove season is quickly approaching. I have a hunt scheduled the first full weekend of September. I can only responsibly handle one dog on the trip. Who gets to go???

Do I take Molly, who knows what she is doing (more or less) and leave Tess at home with poodles because she has no experience? Do I take Tess on her first hunt and leave Molly at home knowing she will see the shotgun being loaded and know she is getting left behind? Only one can go, but who should it be?

Right now I'm leaning towards taking Molly because she can hang...but what if Tess is some sort of hunting/retrieving savant? Tess does have that fire in her belly to retrieve and I know that after she found her first bird, she'd be great. I just don't know what to do!

I could leave them both at home and not spend all day Sunday picking grass burs out of a dog's coat...but that wouldn't be any fun.

Hmmmm... quite the conundrum! I think you're just going to have to plan a second weekend... one for each blond! Take Molly first, 'cause after all, she's the oldest, and then take Tess. It will be interesting to see what she can do. Be sure to let us know what you decide!

Break the rules and bring both dogs.

It's the same problem here. Who gets to go to the boat because we can't handle two at one time (no my words, mind you). Cam goes because he can hang and is calm. However, he hates the water and would much rather find a spot in the shade. I know..I know..a defective Golden Retriever. I lobby for Ferris to go all the time because I KNOW he likes water.

I say bring them both and strap some pockets on Tess and have her carry stuff. LOL

Snow- Molly it is...and a remedial trip for Tess is planned-one with fewer guns.

Duly- There is a high probability that a less than obedient dog could wind up with some lead in her thigh...Tess still has work to do. I need to trust her around live ammo.

Golden- The "big water" can be scary. I fixed my broken golden a few weeks ago. You and S would have such a great time and be the envy of the lake with two instead of one!
